My favorite thought-piece about Ferris Bueller is the “Fight Club” theory, in which Ferris Bueller, the person, is just a figment of Cameron’s imagination, like Tyler Durden, and Sloane is the girl Cameron secretly loves.

One day while he’s lying sick in bed, Cameron lets “Ferris” steal his father’s car and take the day off, and as Cameron wanders around the city, all of his interactions with Ferris and Sloane, and all the impossible hijinks, are all just played out in his head. This is part of the reason why the “three” characters can see so much of Chicago in less than one day — Cameron is alone, just imagining it all.

It isn’t until he destroys the front of the car in a fugue state does he finally get a grip and decide to confront his father, after which he imagines a final, impossible escape for Ferris and a storybook happy ending for Sloane (”He’s gonna marry me!”), the girl that Cameron knows he can never have.

W00Master's Must Have Mac Apps

So, I did my must have Windows apps. Now, it’s time for the Mac.

(In no particular order)

1. Quicksilver (http://www.blacktree.com) - It’s the ultimate keyboard launcher, multi-use application. In my opinion, it’s the keystroke application that everyone else is trying to emulate (Launchbar, Butler, Launchy, Ubiquity, so on and so forth). There’s a metric ton that you can do with this app, and for me it’s a must have.

2. Adium (http://www.adiumx.com) - On the Windows side, the closest app to Adium in terms of functionality and ease of use is Trillian. However, Trillian has become a mess and simply become buggy and unreliable. Adium on the other hand remains easy to use, stable, and bar none the best multichat IM client on any platform.

3. Evernote (http://www.evernote.com) - I’m sort of cheating here, because Evernote is a multi-platform product. In fact, I use it somewhat extensively on my work Windows machine. However, Evernote really didn’t hit it’s mark until the release of both the Mac application and the iPhone application. Ultimately, Evernote is a note-taker’s and organizer’s dream. Try it.

4. Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr) - Handbrake recently came out with a Windows version of their app. However, Handbrake has almost always been synonymous with the Mac. If you do any kind of video encoding, then you must have this app. Then again, if you do video encoding on the Mac, you probably already have this application.

5. Pixelmator (http://www.pixelmator.com) - This is basically “Photoshop for the Rest of Us.” I don’t need the uber power of Photoshop, but I do need to occasionally add some layers. Plus, I don’t want to spend over $400 for an app that I would barely use. Pixelmator fits my type of balance, and it’s incredibly beautiful to look at!

So, that’s it. I did want to mention one last application that is cross platform called Jing (http://www.jingproject.com). At work, it’s one of my most widely used apps. Jing is a screen capture program that allows for instant URL creation of any screenshot/screenvideo that you have created. Awesome.

Since everyone else has been talking about their “Top 10” apps, I might as well list mine:

(No particular order)

1. Launchy (http://www.launchy.net/) - A QuickSilver wannabe for Windows. It’s my must have application on my Windows box at work. Global keystroke launcher.

2. Lookout (Link) - Lookout was bought out by Microsoft and actually merged with their Desktop Search application. However, MS’s Desktop Search app is ASS, so techies (like myself) just loved the streamlined and fast search capabilities in Lookout. All Lookout does is provide fast Outlook email searching. HOWEVER, MS decided to nerf the last version of Lookout, and it no longer works with Outlook 2007. BUT, there is a hack out there that allows you to use the old version of Lookout to get it to work with Outlook 2007! Just check that link out.

3. Yubnub (http://www.yubnub.org) - Ok, it’s not really an application, but a search tool. Yubnub calls itself the “web’s command line.” To some extent, this is true. However, I mainly use Yubnub as my primary search engine. With Yubnub alone, I can search Google, Yahoo, IMDB, Amazon, Ebay, Flickr, and so on - all within one search engine. I can even add my OWN search engines as well. No more, switching search engines just to make one search. I can do it all in one search box. Love it.

4. Foxmarks (http://www.foxmarks.com) - Originally just a Firefox (must have) bookmark synchronizer. Now, it also synchronizes between Firefox, IE, AND Safari (Mac version of Safari only). A must have application and is now one of the FIRST apps I install on any new machine.

5. Dropbox (http://www.getdropbox.com) - This video will explain everything.

Next time, I’ll list my must have Mac Apps. w00t!
